Somebody once quipped - “My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met.” Whether good or bad, the wedding day is definitely a turning point in a man’s life. His whole lifestyle undergoes a radical change including sleeping habits, eating habits and even his choices. It is said that a man’s wife has more power over him than the state has. There are advantages and there are disadvantages of marriage but at the moment you must prepare for what you have to comment on this great occasion in your groom wedding speech.

Normally, people expect the standard things in any groom wedding speech – the thanks, the compliments, the wishes and so on. But if you want to make your speech somewhat special which will be remembered by your wife and all the friends and family, then you will have to give it some thought starting a few days before the wedding.  (Also see our guide to a Maid of Honor Toast).

Start by making notes of what you want to say. Do not worry about what to say first and what to say last but just go on listing. This will not take more than a few minutes everyday. In fact, if you start the thinking process 3-4 days before the wedding, your mind will get enough time to come up with some brilliant ideas. Keep your notes with you all the time and whenever you get an idea, jot it down. Or you can use your blackberry or PDA to record these notes.

Once you have sufficient material, find a quiet time probably just before you go to bed and hit the drawing board. Give some structure to your speech and fill in all the ideas that you have noted. It may not be possible to include all of them so feel free to reject some and accept others. Stick to those points that go with the flow. Do not try to forcefully add in a joke or funny quote. It might look artificial. Then finally, give your groom wedding speech a few rounds of practice. All the best!
